The space underneath your staircase can be a highly useful bit of real estate. Although it’s small, the potential is big! We’ve complied a list of five different ways to maximize the functionality of this space.
1. Office Area
Finding an out-of-the-way space to put in an office area or homework center can be tricky.
Installing a desk underneath the stairs could function as a central family computer area, a quiet nook for those work-from-home days or a designated area to store all homework and school papers. Add some floating shelves and you’ve got yourself a modern, clean desk setup!
The desk set up on the left is made up of 3 IKEA Alex drawer sets and an IKEA table top. Something like this would be a great alternative to a more expensive built-in desk, and can be taken apart easily and switched out for one of these other ideas!
2. Half Bath
If you’re looking for a place to squeeze in a small half bath – underneath your staircase might just be the place!
Stairs are usually centrally located, and having a hidden bathroom in a central location is also useful. I love the floor to ceiling wallpaper in the bathroom on the right – a perfect place for a fun pattern! A floating or pedestal sink would be a must in a space like this, though.
3. Book Nook
Tell me these aren’t just the cutest little reading nooks. This is the perfect place to curl up with a warm drink, pull out your favorite book and forget about everything else.
I don’t know why, but these book nooks are giving me Narnia vibes. It feels like the perfect place for kiddos to let their imaginations run wild.
4. Drink Bar
All I have to say about this is please someone turn their basement into a speak-easy with a drink bar behind the stairs. Tell me it doesn’t give off the coolest vibes. You would be the talk of the town.
5. Mudroom
Let’s all admit it together: We need a place to just dump everything the second we walk in the door. Building a mudroom beneath the stairs is a great way to have a place for backpacks, coasts and shoes, without it all getting piled up by the door.
6. Play Room
If I had a play room under the stairs, I would have re-enacted Harry Potter every day as a child. Make it subtle with a hidden door, or go all out and build out a little mini home!
7. Open Shelving Cubbies
Cubbies are the perfect place to display all of your treasures. Whether that’s plants, photos, artwork or souvenirs from your favorite places, this would be a great place to show them off!
8. Storage
If you are in need of a place to put more shoes, blankets, board games or just hide away something you want to forget about, a little extra storage never hurt!
9. Pantry
Is your staircase close to the kitchen? A little pantry nook would be a great use of the space!
10. Laundry Room
A small laundry room fits perfectly underneath a flight of stairs. Laundry rooms can sometimes be an eyesore, but these little laundry nooks are adorable. You even have space for some shelving or cabinetry to store cleaners and detergents.
