What is Bookshelf Wealth?

I recently came across this term while scrolling TikTok and it stopped me in my tracks. Interior design styles are constantly coming in and out of trend, combining, and evolving. Bookshelf wealth is the combines a traditional style foundation with eclectic elements, and a healthy dose of maximalism. Let’s explore some of  the key traits of this decor trend.

Bookshelves, obviously

We would be remiss to start a blog about Bookshelf Wealth and not list bookshelves as the first component! However, not just any bookshelves.

These shelves are filled with colorful books that have been well-loved by their readers. Instead of the all-too-popular trend of facing the book spines inward to achieve a cohesive neutral look, these books embrace their diversity and proudly show off their mismatched colors, broken spines, and awkward shapes. Stack them on top of each other, fill the shelves too full, this style is above all functional and lived-in. No room for perfectly curated shelves here.

In Feng Shui, books represent knowledge and information. Some say that the ideal place for books is in the home’s wisdom area. Others say that bookshelves can symbolize and build empowering wealth energy.

Add that art, everywhere

I went to Italy a few years ago and by chance walked past a small art studio. The artist invited us in and showed us their stunning canvases. They were leaning against walls, hanging haphazardly, and stacked together. It was brilliant and I’ll never forget it.

That’s the same vibe we’re channeling for our art here. Hang it on the bookshelves, lean it against the walls, and put it on the floor. If you have molding on your walls, be sure to overlap the art with the molding. This eclectic placement of art is beautiful and chaotic all at the same time. Try to thrift and find vintage art. If you’re travelling, make a point to find art and bring it home with you.

Embrace your home's natural charm

Traditional style is a timeless style that takes inspiration from 18th and 19th century designs. It’s often influenced by European decor, but can also incorporate elements from England, France, or the far east. It incorporates ornate details, rich colors, and architectural design elements that all contribute to a deeply historic and layered spaces.

As the foundation for Bookshelf Wealth, try incorporating traditional design in your home by keeping original finishes (when possible), adding in vintage elements, and using a rich color palette and patterns.

Natural wood trim on doors, and ornate moldings can be beautiful elements of a traditional home.

One day I hope to own a home with original wide plate door handles. Until then, I will shamelessly pin every single on I see.

Include cozy seating, you're sitting in it after all

How will your read your books and admire your art? From a cozy seating nook or a window seat of course! The main element of Bookshelf Wealth is “collected” not “curated”. Grandma’s pattered loveseat? Put it in the room. The ottoman you found on the side of the road. It has a place here.

Obviously not everything can be vintage, but even in your new pieces, try to incorporate color and pattern with your larger pieces of furniture. In fact, pattern play is encouraged in these types of spaces.
